5.0 out of five stars Excellent sound. Great for keeping out ambient sound., October 2, 2009
By Sam “Sam” (USA) See all my reviews () This review is from: Shure SE115 K Sound Isolating Earphones with Dynamic Microspeaker II (Black) (Electronics) I had two reasons for purchasing these headphones.

One was for working out in the gym. I could not stand listening to the same single CD that they just will not change and I wanted to block out the sound. I shortly considered to get the Bose noise canceling headset but they were too costly and too bulky for working out.

The other reason, alike to the above, is to block out all ambient sound when traveling on a plane with the migraine causing cacophony of crying babies. What I used to do was put in good sound protection air plugs and put a headset over that just so that the ordeal of flying was not so horrific. Yes, the earplugs blocked out most of the music but I could not hear the interminable screaming babies or the overhead speakers. No matter what Bose claims, and many people believe, Bose headsets can not decrease temporary sounds (e.G. Voices).

Finally, I never liked the iPod earphones. I find them to be uneasy and they do not keep out external sound. I know that they are intended not to keep out external sound so that you still hear the outside world.

This comes with a large range of ear buds and I wound up using the smallest.

The sound quality of these earphones is great. Between the sound blocking characteristics of the buds and the high quality of the sound, the external world blissfully ceases to exist. As the information state, you could never want to use these where you have to listen to warning sounds like car horns.

I did not read any of the reviews before purchasing these earphones. I was in the Apple store purchasing a nano iPod and I grabbed the the Shure earphones because it said ‘sound isolating’. It was somewhat of an impulse buy.

After I brought them home, but before I opened the package (once opened, they can not be returned for health reasons), I checked out the reviews. Since the reviews were so glowing I decided to purchase a set through for way less money than what I had paid at Apple.

I has been amazed at how well the sound separation works and the great sound quality. When I rip a CD, I set the bit rate to 320 kbps to preserve the sound quality.

Even when I set the volume to pretty low, I wind up talking way too loudly. Between the sound separation and the music, it is hard to gauge how loudly you are talking. I am so happy that I did not purchase the Bose at over 4x the cost.

Where I work, on occasion people talk way too loudly. Now I put these in, play soft music and I do not have to suffer listening to all the sports talk anymore.

I love these earphones. I am purchasing another for a close relative.

Oct 6, 09 update

I ordered and received another set. Ordered on Saturday, arrived on Monday (normal shipping rates).
I checked the price on today (Tuesday). It skyrocketed 60 from last weekend! I wish my 401(k) increased that much so quickly.

Oct 15, 09 update

Bought another set. I love these guys. If you use the sound insulating earbuds (the bubble types) and you put them properly (like hearing protection ear plugs) the sound quality improves considerably and the outside world disappears (under normal sound conditions I would not expect them to block out the sound of a jack hammer).

I was in a waiting room with someone else listening to music at a pretty low volume. I thinked about my software code in my head and I whispered (or, so I thought) to my friend, “I found a bug in my program”. Her face turned somewhat red and everyone in the waiting room smiled in a friendly manner. It turned out that I had screamed. While I was in my own little world, I was not able to gauge the volume of my voice.

On another note, I am surprised that these things can deliver bass so well. While your body does not shake like being beside many 12″ woofers, the bass is pleasantly deep.

Keep looking into the price on before purchasing. The price fluctuates between twenty and forty dollars every not many days. The stock market and gas prices change far less.

Oct 28, 09 update

While walking on a big thoroughfare in a big city, the din from the trucks and the traffic deafened. I put the ear phones with the bubble sound insulating ear buds on with the volume set to low to medium. In this case, I listened to Simon and Garfunkel, not exactly blasting music. Except for one motorino (scooter/moped), I heard literally no city traffic. I became far more relaxed.

Sept 13, ten update

Still working, no problems. I use them now more usually. They are great for routine, boring jobs like mowing the lawn. The ear phones block out most of the sound from the machine and I can listen to music. Good luck trying to do that with using Apple’s ear buds.

4.0 out of five stars A good 1st step in changing your stock MP3 player earphone, but it may be better, April 8, 2009
By Arie Andika Setiawan “seti4w4n” (Jakarta, Indonesia) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: Shure SE115 RD Sound Isolating Earphones with Dynamic Microspeaker II (Red) (Electronics) I have generally been inquisitive about Shure in ear earphones, because I have heard many of good things about it. It was a pretty risk purchasing this pair (the Shure SE 115) because it is quite new and the number of reviews are too not many, but I still went ahead anyways because of my curiosity.

I’m used to hearing Sennheiser’s phones (I owned HD 595, CX 500 and PX 100 headphones), so there are at least two things to think about when you read this review: I am switching brand, and I am switching phone type (mostly on ear to in ear).

Shure’s SE115 has many good things going on about it (from my perspective). If you like bass, it delivers. But do note that the bass sounds a bit on the fake side. Answer is much better in the medium to low end of the frequency spectrum (special note to vocals, they sound more real, somewhat warm, which is a pretty good change to Sennheiser’s rather crispy cold vocals). Caused by more stress on the bass (which is what Shure is most likely aiming for with this product), treble takes the back seat but it is still there. Plus, and this is vital to me, since they are in ear earphones I expected a more on the face experience (or in ear, if you like), but the sound I got was a bit remote and muffled. This baffled me, because my PX100 and HD 595 manage to deliver on your face experience though they’re on ears. Possibly this is caused by heavier bass (and Shure’s bubble info and driver anatomy), but do note this when you are deciding to purchase these phones. I could peg this more on preferences than good or bad quality.

Let’s move on to build and comfort. The build is of high quality and the provided accessories are complete, which is to be projected out of Shure (I’ve read reviews on their other models: thick and strong cables, pouch, spare bubble info, etc). In this department, SE 115 doesn’t disappoint. By comfort, I personally find myself hating the bubble info since they hurt the ear (I’ve used the smallest size and still they hurt and irritate my ear canals) but they do get the job done in isolating outside sound. If you do not mind it, these do get the job done. I personally recommend the rubber info instead. They are more comfy, though they do not totally block outside sound.

Do note the title of my review though, and it’s true that this is a good 1st step for those thinking of changing their stock earphones with something better (welcome to the audiophile’s world!). But do think about the following: if you are totally adamant in to get audiophile entry level in ear earphones and made by Shure, then you can not go no wrong (duh). But if you do not mind on ear models, then go for Sennheiser’s PX100. There are tons of good reviews here in on that model (700 plus reviews and an average of 4.5 stars, that is a safe bet). It is cheaper, and delivers high quality audio hands down. If you are wanting to shell out more cash, go for Sennheiser HD 595 (I got it from for around USD180) and I think it is damn cheap for something as excellent as those.

If you really want sound isolating, in ear models then attempt Sennheiser’s CX300 (I do not own them but I have listen to them), or if you have more cash to use up go for CX500 (which I also own). But do note that Sennheiser has a different audio characteristics. When it comes down to it, on occasion it is only a matter of preferences.

These are, presuming, you are in the USD100 200 price range.

So to sum it up:
Strong bass, a little artificial
Warm, rather realistic vocals
Excellent low to medium response
Excellent build quality
Accessories provided are quite complete
Bubble info and rubber info (preferences)
Somewhat muffled in general sound (preferences)

Hope the review helps!

5.0 out of five stars run over by my wife still working, July 30, 2009
By Robert Gruner “Light on the Water” (California) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: Shure SE115 K Sound Isolating Earphones with Dynamic Microspeaker II (Black) (Electronics) I have been happy with the earphones. The sound quality was good. The different ear cover alternatives made it simple to find a comfy fit. I thought running the cables over the tops of my ears may be annoying, but did not find it so.

To top it off, I accidentally dropped them in the driveway (I thought I’d left them at work) and noticed them still lying there a couple of days afterward. After being left outside and my wife running over them a couple of times with her car, the earpieces had many dings from the concrete, but they still worked, with no obvious loss of quality. Much better built than the brand they replaced.

4.0 out of five stars , a good earphone for sweaty runners, June 13, 2010
By Alex Hills (Phoenix, AZ USA) See all my reviews This review is from: Sennheiser Adidas CX 680 Sports Earbuds with Volume Control and Earfin Holding System (Electronics) I have been on a quest for a new pair of earphones for weeks. I have spent many hours reading hundreds of reviews on different models. My major requirements (in order of importance) were: 1) do not fall out when doing tiring exercise like running, 2) will not cease functioning or experience a decrease in functionality caused by sweating (I sweat profusely when exercising, e.G., my clothes are usually drenched after an hour of cardio), 3) Comfort, 4) Price, 5) Sound quality, and 6) Appearance/Style.

Based on all that I read, I decided that the new Adidas branded Sports line from Sennheiser may be the best choice for me, so I splurged, got the CX680 at a big box store, and decided to test them since I knew I could return them for a full refund inside 30 days if not pleased. If I liked them I knew I could buy online for 25 30 less. Note that I favor the in ear design, but was considering the neckband design of the PMX680 as an alternate. But, I hoped to find one pair that I could use for cardio, weightlifting, leisure, and travel.

First, I’ll explain what comes in the package. You get:

(1) SYMMETRICAL earphones with a 30″ cord and a straight jack
(2) a 24″ extender with a volume control on one end and an “L” jack on the other
(3) a Velcro carrying pouch
(4) three sets (S,M,L) of earfins, one set of M covers w/o fins, and three sets (S,M,L) of earbud covers
(5) a clip
(6) a cleaning tool

My evaluation of each of these components:

(1) Short Cord: Used w/o the extender, the earphones are best worn using an armband (either arm is good caused by the symmetrical cord) with the cord clipped to the shirt on whatever side the armband is to decrease tension on the reverse side earbud. I ran for 1.5 hours last night with the cord clipped this way to the band of a T shirt. It stayed in place the complete time and was totally unobtrusive.

(2) Extender: The volume control is light and may be clipped to the band of your shorts w/o adding obvious weight. With my iPod Nano clipped to one side, the volume control on the other, and the cord under my shirt, there was many cord slack (I’m 5’8″), but the motion wasn’t extreme and not disruptive. The wheel of the volume control has a slight resistance to it so that you will not mistakenly blast out your eardrums while adjusting it.

(3) Pouch: The pouch is good quality and roomy enough to hold the earbuds and a small music player. But, the cords do tend to become entangled easily.

(4) Earbuds/Earfins: With many trial and error I was able to find the right mix of fin and earbud that fit comfortably and did not fall out with motion or sweat. I have had more difficulty finding the correct fit for my L ear, but throughout a 1.5 hour run I only had to change the bud once b/c the fin had moved (Note that the earbud itself was still firmly sealed).

(5) Clip: As mentioned above, the clip work great when attached to a band and most likely could also with a hem. I tried to use it in the center of my shirt and it simply fell off. There is a groove on the top that apparently is supposed to hold the wire but it does not; you just have to clip the wire with the clothing.

(6) I have still to use the cleaning tool.

Now on to how the CX680 ranks using my requirements.

(1) Fit & Staying Power, 5/5: These things stay put. I have had the stock earbuds which don’t fit my ears well, fall out with motion or sweat, and sound crappy. I could imagine that majority of people can find an earfin/earbud mix that fits them well. I like that this product is customizable rather than one size fits all.

(2) Sweat Resistance, 5/5: More than any other pair of earbuds I have owned, these seem to be unaffected by sweating. They don’t loosen when sweat is in the ears and their rubberized materials seem particularly sweat “proof”. I haven’t still tried to put them in water. I could hope that these don’t as easily succumb to the issues common with other earphones that seem less sturdy/durable. If they do fail at many point, at least with Sennheiser you have their two year warranty (another reason I chose these over something with only a 90 day warranty).

(3) Comfort, 5/5: I do not notice I have wearing them.

(4) Price, 3/5: These surely aren’t the cheapest earphones on the market, but they’re new and will probably come down in price. The cheapest I have found is $70 online with free shipping. I could greatly recommend purchasing them locally, seeing if they work for you, , then returning them and purchasing them for cheaper online. If you have got something that works for you now, I’d say wait for the price to drop on these. If money is no concern, just purchase them!

(5) Sound quality, 3/5: I am not an audiophile and I did not get these b/c I wanted the best sounding buds, and they are not. I listen entirely to electronic music and they are OK, but somewhat missing in bass. Not sure if “tinny” or “muddy” are the correct terms, but I have thought that my music sounded better with JBuds J2s (but they could fall out when I’d sweat and shorted out after a year), with Acoustibuds attached to stock earbuds (these sound great and really stay pretty well throughout motion and sweating but they are bulky, must be twisted into the ear canal, and it is challenging to find the sweet spot as far as the “best” position for maximum effect), or with over the head models (these offend my sense of fashion). The CX680s aren’t bad, just not the greatest sounding, but I am wanting to sacrifice on music quality to eliminate them moving around, falling out, or breaking b/c of sweat damage.

(6) look, 4/5: I do not know why Sennheiser thinks it needed to make their Sports lines in bright, obnoxious colors (neon green, orange, and now yellow), instead of more muted grays, blacks, or whites, but they are OK. I am not using them to win any fashion contests, and they are more appealing, IMO, than the neckband, over the ears, or over the head models.

In summary, I give the CX680s a 4/5: they are great for what they are meant (i.E., reduction of slippage caused by motion or sweat), but could sound better, be less costly, and decrease the flashy factor. I could have favored an asymmetrical cord design so that the earphones may be used w/o the clip when using an armband. Before my 30 day “trial” period is over, I’ll be returning these to Big Box Store and buying them online. Hopefully they’ll prove to be a good investment and a solution to the annoyance of finding the best earphones for sweaty cardio freaks like me.

2.0 out of five stars Fixes one issue but causes another, March 9, 2010
By J. Radinsky See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) () This review is from: Sennheiser Adidas CX 680 Sports Earbuds with Volume Control and Earfin Holding System (Electronics) I decided to upgrade to the CX680s after using a pair of CX380s for the last six months. The 380s were pretty good but did not generally stay in place throughout my workouts.

The good news with the CX680s is the ear fin technology works really well. They stay in place the whole time I am at the gym. The bad news is Adidas/Sennheiser should have given more thought to the cord length. The standard cord is too short unless you are using an armband for your music player. Then it is too long so you must wrap it around or have it move the whole time you are working out.

If you do not have an armband, then you must use the extender with the inline volume control. When you do this the cord is way too long and it and the volume control bounce all over the place. You may be able to use the included clip to keep one from moving but you can not stop both from moving. The moving is super diverting because you may be able to hear it through the headphones and you do not know what the cord is going to get snagged on.

Having said all this, I guess these could work for you if you are the right height (I’m 5’10”). Height is vital because the volume control also has a clip on it that you may use to keep it from flopping around. In my case, the clip did not reach my waist so I could not clip it so it just dangled.

5.0 out of five stars workout headphones, March 20, 2010
By B. Casto (Ohio, USA) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) () This review is from: Sennheiser Adidas CX 680 Sports Earbuds with Volume Control and Earfin Holding System (Electronics) PROS: moisture tolerant, excellent sound (after ‘treble reducer’ eq and removing earfins so they could fit properly in my ear), great stability.

CONS: uncomfortable cord lengths (comes with long ext. Cord, short main cord), uncomfortable earfins, initial sound quality presents with a bit much treble, info somewhat uneasy after a while in ear canals.

CONCLUSION: As workout headphones are worried, in comparison to the Bose In ear ‘phones, Apple In ears, my prev. Fav. Sony MDR EX85s, and other Sennheisers I have tried, these offer far superior sound and functionality inside the scope of exercise specific headphones. I workout many (sweating considerably when doing so) and favor clear bass; now that I figured out not to use the earfin feature or bass increase (iPhone 3GS, iTouch 2G: these sound really BAD with increase on, the sound is amplified terribly) I would not hesitate for a second to replace this pair with another of the same, were they to break.

2.0 out of five stars many will love these others will hate them, January 18, 2011
By Steve See all my reviews This review is from: Beats Studio by Dr. Dre Hi Def Noise Canceling Over Ear Headphones (Electronics) The good remarkable bass!

The bad everything else!

If you like boom cars, this is the cats meow.

The bass is tight, but extreme and drowns out the midrange which sounds flat. The problem is that if you want to hear the midrange, the phones must be so deafening that the bass will cause hearing loss after a short time.

These aren’t audiophile quality, but I am sure that bass freaks will fall in love with the cans.

I’m not the last word on what amounts to good sound, to each their own. If you love bass at the expense of everything else, you will love these.

From my perspective, 90 of most music occurs in the midrange and bass and expanded highs are the icing on the cake. In this case, think of a cup cake (midrange) with two pounds of frosting (bass).

5.0 out of five stars nice headphones, I love them., September 3, 2010
By MusicLK See all my reviews () This review is from: Beats Studio by Dr. Dre Hi Def Noise Canceling Over Ear Headphones (Electronics) Before I start my review, I’d like to say that I’m not an audiophile, but I do love music. So this review is towards the regular listeners who love music.
I received these two days ago, and I was really anticipating its arrival, and I’m pleased with the product.
Since many like concise reviews, I’ll list the Pros and Cons.

Pros
Very good packaging (If anybody cares about that)
Great audio quality, balanced and you may be able to really feel the “dimensions” of music
Sexy design
Extremely Comfortable
Good case, not the best, but will still get do the work of defending the headphones
Good extras (mute button, 1/8 to 1/4 jack, two cables (one with control talk, the mic quality is impressive), and thanks for the AAA batteries, Monster)

Cons
Noise canceling is not as efficient as I hoped it could be (i listen to my ipod nano 5g on about 2545)
The hinges don’t seem too strong (and one side of the headphones don’t line perfectly)
Very expensive
Can’t function without batteries
Sound leaks badly (50 on ipod nano 5g)
Noise, or buzzing noises may be heard at low volumes

The in general build quality is pretty good, but I personally believe that if treated about it may break, particularly around the hinges.
The build quality on the hinges may be improved.

I could recommend the studios to the people who have the money. If the cost is too much, I would not purchase these, as there are many lower cost headphones with decent sound.

4.0 out of five stars they’re pretty good but there are many better alternatives IMO., October 30, 2010
By SHELDON “#1 Muggle” (Silver Spring, MD, United States) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: Beats Studio by Dr. Dre Hi Def Noise Canceling Over Ear Headphones (Electronics) Had considering many nice headphones for a little while now after messing around with the and some others. I decided to go with the Denon AHD2000 High Performance Over Ear Headphones for some reasons. 1st, sound quality was more to my liking with the Denon’s. The Beats seem a bit bright on the treble with the music I usually listen to (Hip Hop and R&B) which is annoying at times. The Denon’s seem more balanced with about the same bass. Second, comfort. The Denon feel more comfy around my ears, I can wear them for hours and no issues with my glasses/ears, etc. Last, value. For all that, the Denon where cheaper on than the Beats. I was sold after that. Couple things I’ll give the Beats over the Denon set: style (they look better if that is really vital to you) and the controls, they are nice to have were not as high on my list (maybe if I were purchasing gym headphones or something). Now if you are looking for the best headphones in Best purchase, the Beats are most likely it and again, I did not think they were bad hence the four stars, just think the Denon are a better product at a better price.

I’d certainly support purchasers to listen to the different headphones and pick the ones that you feel reproduce the music/movies/games or whatever the way you like. Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder here.
